How to choose an AI consultancy for your small business: 7 key questions

Updated:

Many companies offer “AI”, and not all suit a small business. These seven questions help tell apart who solves a problem from who just sells technology.

1. Does it start from your problem or from the technology?

A good consultancy first understands your business and then proposes the tool, not the other way round.

2. Does it build and operate, or only deliver a report?

A report does not save hours. Ask whether it implements the solution and maintains it.

3. Who owns the code and the data?

Intellectual property should be yours, and you should be able to take your data if you change provider.

4. How does it handle privacy?

Ask where data is hosted, which models it uses and whether it complies with GDPR. If you work with sensitive data, have it explained in writing.

5. Does it deliver in phases with measurable results?

A first result in weeks beats a months-long project with nothing to see.

6. What happens after launch?

An AI system needs continuous review and improvement. Make sure there is support.

7. Can it show real experience?

Ask for cases, sectors it has worked in and references. And be wary of promises without verifiable figures.
